Coles takes a hyper local approach

November, 2018

Surrey Hills was the chosen location to roll out the first of Coles’ small-format stores. The new ‘Coles Local’ is about half the size of a full supermarket at 1280sqm, and features gourmet local produce, specialty ranges, an in-store chef and barista as well as a “Foodie Hub”. Taking a hyper-local focus, it has a no edible food waste policy, with 100% of its food waste going to local charities.

ClarkeHopkinsClarke was engaged to design the new Coles Local with a brief to create a store that would embed itself within the surrounding community. Our key objective was to preserve two heritage facades to retain the unique character of the architecture and the streetscape. We utilised large bi-fold windows and plenty of glazing to activate the main street frontage and provide visibility in and out.

It had been a point of speculation in the local community ever since Coles acquired the space. But the sympathetic design and build has really changed people’s opinions, it is now a unique feature within Surrey Hill’s main street.
