Our Lady of Mercy College Heidelberg’s new three level Science Centre celebrates the activity of teaching and learning while also representing the progressive and exciting future direction of the College. Located on a prominent corner of the Heidelberg Campus, the new Science Centre has become a focal point for the College and a dynamic statement to the local community.
The building features a sinuous, patterned brick façade, punctuated by narrow glazed panels that offer passers-by a glimpse of the activity and learning within. Bookend curtain glass walls contain the curved façade and extend over the three levels of the building creating a new transparent and engaging interface with the street.
The new facility includes six state of the art science laboratories, sixteen general learning studios over two levels, and two central open learning zones that can be opened up to the learning studios via three metre wide operable glass panels. The open plan activity zones provide breakout spaces for group learning, project work, presentations, year level assemblies as well as individual student study outside of class time. Vibrant colours define the journey through each level of the building, promoting movement and flow and providing stimulating learning environments that engage students, inspire interaction and encourage collaboration.
