Idzfan Zainal

Senior Project Leader

B. Planning & Design (Arch) UniMelb, Dip Arch Technology, LUCT, Kuala Lumpur

“We will find the solution together.”

Idzfan is a considered, collaborative Senior Project Leader with a wealth of experience on major health projects including the iconic Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne and Perth Children’s Hospital.  He’s enthusiastic, process-driven and a great listener.

As a health facility planner and designer Idzfan puts an emphasis on developing design and planning solutions through collaboration. He trusts the design process, which is why he makes time to prepare materials that trigger ideas and discussions and ultimately help the team towards innovative solutions and outcomes.

Architecture beckoned early. At school in the heart of Kuala Lumpur during the building boom of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s he watched KLCC Tower materialise through his classroom window. He was excited by the skyline full of cranes and keen to be part of the action. Though it’s fair to say he never anticipated a specialty in health. Bouts of asthma over several years necessitated hospital stays he thought had put him off hospitals for life. Luckily for us, they gave him an insider’s perspective and empathy for patients, families and staff alike.

A decade’s study, work and travel in Malaysia and around Australia has given Idzfan diverse design experience including paediatric, cancer and regional health care, residential interiors in a KL design practice he co-founded with friends, and consulting to Malaysia’s Public Works Department on Building Information Modelling. He was also part of a team that won a competition to design the Kuwaiti embassy and diplomatic residences in KL. We have ArchiSoccer to thank for introducing us to Idzfan. Luring him back to Melbourne to join our specialist health team was quite a score.
