Brighton Grammar Middle School
Celebrating transition in the crucial middle years
The new Brighton Grammar Middle School was a collaboration between architects and educators to create a facility that would support the diverse needs of boys over their in year 7 and year 8. The facilities provide students with opportunities to discover what they like and what they are capable of within a community of learners. The standalone campus provides a transition between the junior and senior school. More adult in feel than the junior facilities and more masculine in character, it provides a variety of areas for active recreation, sport and engagement with the environment.
The ICT rich internal learning areas include generalist and specialist facilities to enable the delivery of the broad curriculum and are designed to generate enthusiasm and excitement for learning within an inclusive learning community.
The main, purpose-built Middle School building, the Urwin Centre for Learning is planned around a central nexus, surrounded by a series of four Learning Neighbourhoods. These provide a variety of formal and informal learning environments to suit both the teaching methodology and the individual learning needs of students.
Situated to the edge of the most public corner of the site, the clean, modernist exterior, and its striking double height public entry reinforce the School’s civic presence and modern approach to education.
