The Ormond Central mixed-use precinct is a proposed transport oriented development within Melbourne’s South East corridor. The key project objectives focus on providing higher quality infrastructure and amenity to the local community of businesses and residents. In addition, the interconnected uses will attract and bring together a diverse population of residents, commuters and shoppers, breaking down the mould of typical apartment buildings.
Following the removal of a level crossing on North Road, the development of this land and airspace will capture value within the site, making it possible for the delivery of key public infrastructure. Secondly, it will serve as a link between the two existing retail precincts flanking the train line, generating an expanded offering and improved experience for local shoppers as well as better commercial opportunities for the current tenancies. Thirdly, it will introduce a quality apartment style product into this established residential community with a more affordable entry point into the market.
The masterplan for Ormond Central comprises three levels of podium that will house a civic plaza, a full line supermarket, retail, cafes, restaurants, bike share facilities and commuter car parking. The podium will be landscaped with plenty of open space to facilitate connections within the vertical community and to foster healthy lifestyles. Above the podium, three towers of residential apartments are proposed. The development will sit above, and have direct access to, the underground Ormond Train Station.
