The King David School

A continuing relationship with the Jewish community

The King David School educates students aged 4 to 18 from a broad spectrum of the Jewish Community. Our Practice has had a long association with the School and recently worked with the School on the development of a new masterplan for the significant re-imagining of their facilities and approach.

The project, underpinned by ideas of ‘lives and endures’, was focused on consolidating the school onto two main campuses in Armadale. The planning supports a continuation of their ‘small school’ structures which forms the foundations of their educational and pastoral care programs.

A variety of facilities will be accessible to all students, with the design enabling contemporary pedagogical approaches, student focused learning and a supportive, collaborative environment for staff.

The most recently completed project delivered a new ELC on the Dandenong Road campus. Catering for children typically 3 and 4 years old the facility is designed over two levels with a large outdoor terrace on level one providing an outdoor play environment that can combine with the lower level play space. The facility is designed as 6 child rooms catering for 26 children each with interconnecting doors allowing flexibility of teaching and caring within the building.

The design seeks to minimise the impact on the residential character of the area by presenting a house-like form to Denbigh Road whilst opening up to the north to maximise sunlight and light penetration to outdoor play spaces and child rooms. The interior design plays with geometry and colour to provide clearly identifiable child room spaces that are engaging for the children as well as assist with wayfinding throughout the facility. These spaces create opportunities for indoor/outdoor learning and allow children to engage with the outside from all parts of the facility.

Whilst designing for complex site conditions and unique operational needs the building outcome meets not only the brief from the school but also DEECD requirements for child spaces and was successfully completed on time and within budget.
