Located within the ground floor of the existing Babel Building, the Media Studios project transforms underutilised space into a state-of-the-art media production hub for the University of Melbourne. Designed to support a growing demand within the university’s evolving curriculum, the facility provides industry-standard environments for learning, experimentation, and professional production.

The redevelopment includes a large television studio, smaller multipurpose TV studio, audio production and media studios, AV control rooms, equipment loans and management areas, and supporting technical and ancillary spaces. Advanced audiovisual and broadcast technologies are seamlessly integrated into the architectural fabric to create flexible, high-performance production environments within the constraints of an existing structure.

Delivering this project required careful consideration of building services and operational continuity within the eight-level Babel Building and was driven by extensive consultation with university representatives, academic staff, and industry partners. As the facility supports a new and developing area of curriculum, the design team worked collaboratively with stakeholders to define functional requirements, ensuring the studios are tailored to future teaching models and technological advancements. The result is a facility that bridges academic exploration and industry practice, providing a professional platform for the next generation of media creators.
