Sandringham College is a multi-campus secondary school located in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne. The project commenced with the development of a masterplan for both the Sandringham Campus at Bluff Road and the Senior Campus at Holloway Road, Sandringham, which looked to shape a unified pedagogical vision, revitalise the campuses, and create a unique and cohesive identity for the College.
The Discovery Centre is the first completed stage of the masterplanned works and creates a freestanding learning community that integrates Year 7 & 8 general learning areas with specialist science spaces, student amenities and staff work areas. This dedicated facility is designed to accommodate 200 students, providing a variety of learning settings that support the school’s pedagogical vision and shape a welcoming and nurturing environment that helps to transition students into the high school environment.
The design comprises a general learning zone which includes an 80 seat auditorium, seminar space for collaborative learning and presentations, formal learning space for instructional learning, and various independent and interdependent learning zones. The adjacent science zone provides dedicated physics, chemistry and biology labs, flexible learning spaces that can be opened up to accommodate team teaching, breakout spaces to enable independent learning and a multipurpose think tank. The Discovery Centre was designed to enhance street activation and enable community use of facilities outside of school hours.
