Originally comprising six standalone buildings linked by external walkways, the school faced challenges of accessibility, outdated infrastructure, and disconnected learning spaces. At the heart of the transformation is the refurbishment of Block A, a two-storey heritage building reimagined with the “Chain of Learning” concept. Inspired by the natural flow of the nearby Moonee Ponds Creek, whose name is thought to be derived from the Aboriginal term “Moonee Moonee,” or “Chain of Ponds”, this design activates previously under-utilised corridors into dynamic, flexible learning areas that foster creativity, self-regulation, and engagement.

Block D has been redefined as a cutting-edge STEM hub, empowering students with hands-on opportunities in project-based learning. Beyond the buildings, outdoor learning spaces to the north and south extend the educational environment, embedding nature into daily learning and supporting student wellbeing.
The ‘chain of ponds’ narrative, derived from the Aboriginal meaning of the school’s name ‘Moonee’, has translated well into a conceptual model for the learning environment and provides a rich metaphor for the arrangement and creation of unique, fluid and interactive learning spaces that no doubt spark creativity and inspire joyful learning for their students.
