Tatu City on the outskirts of Nairobi is transforming a 5000-acre site within the Tatu Coffee Estate into Africa’s most sustainable, walkable, liveable city. A City of Villages with a 60-hectare wildlife sanctuary at its heart, this major urban regeneration project links compact mixed-use precincts with 100+kms of greenways, walkways, bike-paths and nature trails.

Interconnected districts introduce diverse housing and employment opportunities for a projected population of 250,000 and world-class health, education, retail, arts, cultural and sporting facilities. This is underpinned by sustainable infrastructure, energy and transport systems, and major reforestation initiatives regenerating agricultural land with biodiverse habitat.

The masterplan targets 100% green energy, 40% tree canopy coverage, and 40% of daily trips via cycling or walking. Shaped by extensive community consultation and staged development creating steady, sustainable growth over the past 8 years, it provides world-leading urban living grounded in Tatu’s rich heritage, dynamic culture and sublime natural environment.

Situated on the ancestral lands of the Kikuyu people, the masterplan is shaped by extensive engagement with Kikuyu Elders, farmers and communities. It honours ancestral connections to the land, preserves sacred Mugumo trees, and celebrates culture through design, storytelling and wayfinding.
